About GreenWater/CyanoLab — GWL/CL Staff

GWL/CL is nationally and internationally recognized leaders in the field of toxigenic cyanobacteria analyses. Our staff has over 50 years cumulative experience in the fields of aquatic biology, limnology, phycology, aquatic toxicology, analytical chemistry and cyanotoxin analyses.

Christopher D. Williams, Ph.D.
President, GreenWater Laboratories/CyanoLab
Aquatic Toxicologist -
Detailed CV

Dr. Williams has been with GreenWater Laboratories/CyanoLab since its inception and has worked in the field of water quality and aquatic toxicology research for over 20 years and in the field of cyanotoxin production for over seven years. Dr. Williams has managed numerous long-term monitoring projects for federal, state, county, and private agencies and has been an invited speaker to numerous national and international conferences and workshops regarding the identification and prevalence of cyanotoxins in the aquatic environment.

Mark T. Aubel, Ph. D.
Vice President, GreenWater Lab/CyanoLab
Analytical Chemist - Detailed CV

Dr. Aubel joined GreenWater Laboratories/CyanoLab in March of 2002 after spending 12 years as a Research and Senior Research Scientist in the Pulp and Paper Division of Hercules, Inc. He is presently Vice President and the principle analytical chemist of GreenWater Lab/CyanoLab. He is responsible for the development and supervision of the lab’s current analytical chemistry services for the analysis of algal toxins. Mark amassed considerable experience throughout his career with the development and implementation of both chromatographic and spectrometric applications for the identification and quantification of ultra-trace organic contaminants in aqueous matrices. This background provides the foundation for the state-of-the-art sample preparation techniques and liquid chromatographic/mass spectrometric (LC/MS) methodologies currently utilized at GreenWater Labs/CyanoLab for the analysis of algal toxins. Mark’s history of research and adaptation with analytical methodologies provides a unique resource for the continued evolution and competitiveness of the analytical chemistry capabilities at GreenWater Labs/CyanoLab.

Andrew Chapman, M.S.

Phycologist, Aquatic Biologist - Detailed CV

Andrew was one of the original staff members of GreenWater Laboratories/CyanoLab beginning in March 2001. He is currently the head staff phycologist and is responsible for identification and enumeration of algae samples in addition to project management and report preparation. He also isolates cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) for culture and maintains a culture collection. Andrew has studied algae for over 15 years and has published articles in some of the leading journals in his field. Andrew's focus is on freshwater cyanobacteria taxonomy and is regularly asked to present talks and workshops on the identification of these important organisms.

Amanda Foss, B.S.
Environmental Chemist/Limnologist - Detailed CV

Amanda Foss is the newest staff member at GreenWater Laboratories/CyanoLab. Amanda is an environmental chemist who graduated in 2006 with her Bachelor of Science from Lake Superior State University. At LSSU, Amanda conducted cyanobacterial research, which focused on the effectiveness of current molecular methods for microcystin detection. She also worked with HPLC and ELISA for the detection of cyanobacterial toxins as a research assistant to Dr. Judy Westrick. Amanda’s primary responsibilities at GWL/CL include assisting and organizing field monitoring programs, the in vitro culture of toxigenic species for the purification of standards, and performing toxin extractions and analyses.

Amanda is currently enrolled in the University of Florida’s Master of Science program with the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, and will be studying aspects of cyanotoxin production.
