Algal Analysis — Algal Biovolume Estimation

In some cases, to better understand the algal community from a functional or ecological perspective, it will be desirable to estimate algal biovolume. This information in conjunction with cell density allows one to understand if the algal community is dominated by a large number of small species (high number but low biovolume) or a smaller number of larger species (low number but high biovolume).

Cell biovolumes will be calculated by measuring length, width and depth of 10-15 cells (if possible; more if necessary depending on variability of species) and applying the volumetric formula for the geometric shape or shapes that best fits.
